My fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Weidman, liked a 32-page story I wrote enough to read it aloud to our class. That’s how it happens.
I have worked as a writer, editor, publications director and educator. I have published three books as a writer and eight as an editor. In 1991, my wife, Susan Haynes Cates, and I moved from western Massachusetts to North Carolina, where we lived on Roanoke Island. Recently we moved to Fearrington, N.C., near Chapel Hill.
My most recent employment was as the editor for 24 years of the monthly magazine, Carolina Country. Published for more than 60 years by North Carolina’s member-owned, nonprofit electric cooperatives, our magazine twice won the national award given annually for the best magazine for electric cooperative members.
This site shows some work I have done recently and over the years. I will not post here, however, any short fiction, because I hope to publish some in journals and magazines. Most literary publishers will not consider previously published writing, including writing that appears on the Internet in any form. That’s how it happens. I have a collection of about 40 short stories that I am happy to show to anyone who asks me to see something. Please see my contact information here. And let me know what you think.
